Husky’s asphalt processing and marketing activities play an important role in adding value to the Company’s heavy crude oil production. Husky is the largest manufacturer of asphalt in Western Canada, refining 28,000 barrels per day of crude oil into asphalt. Used for road paving and building products, asphalt is produced from heavy oil at its Lloydminster asphalt refinery. Approximately fifty-three percent of the refinery's production is made into asphalt products.
Husky’s employees have received numerous safety awards and set many production and shipment records during the last few years. In addition, the refinery is Quality Management ISO-9001:2000 Certified (Certification #94733).
The asphalt refinery operates year-round and supplies 24-hour service. The manufacturing centre produces more than 100 specifically engineered products and is located within an integrated infrastructure that includes:
- links to Husky’s 2,087-kilometre crude oil pipeline system
- a dedicated rail fleet of over 350 rail cars
- excellent relations with trucking and rail transport industries
- 1.2 million barrels of asphalt storage capacity
With a market share of more than 38 percent, Husky is the largest marketer of paving asphalts in Western Canada. In addition, 46 percent of its production is exported to the United States. The high quality of Husky’s asphalt continues to enhance the Company’s reputation as a supplier of choice.
