Sunrise, located 60 kilometres northeast of Fort McMurray, Alberta, will be Husky’s second oil sands project and is an integrated oil sands joint development with BP. The Sunrise lease has probable and possible reserves of 3.2 billion barrels of bitumen from the McMurray formation which is up to 100 metres in thickness.

Regulatory approval was obtained in December 2005 for the phased development of a 200,000 barrels per day project using steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) technology.

Front-end engineering work was completed in 2007. Source water exploration continues and flow testing of the first 10 wells is complete. Additional wells are planned for the winter of 2008.
