Calgary, Alberta – August 18, 2011- Today, the Heart and Stroke Foundation will recognize Husky Energy for their generous gift of $40,000 at 11:30am at Eau Claire Market. This gift supports one of the Foundation's long-standing fundraisers, Heart&Stroke Big Bike. Causing heads to turn wherever it goes, the fundraiser is named after the BIG 30-seat BIKE, which weighs 1.5 tons and measures the size of a school bus - 7.5 feet wide by 30 feet long. Husky Energy's donation has enabled the Foundation to acquire a truck powerful enough to transport the Big Bike to communities across Alberta.
"Last year more than 5,700 Albertans rode the Big Bike, raising close to $1 million for life-giving research," said Donna Hastings, CEO, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, NWT & Nunavut. "The generosity of Husky Energy helps to ensure the delivery of this vital fundraiser, which engages people across the province and creates results that benefit all Canadians."
"We are pleased to contribute to this very worthwhile cause," said Husky CEO Asim Ghosh. "Through their important research and advocacy work, the Heart and Stroke Foundation is improving our quality of life."
Husky Energy has been a great supporter of the Heart and Stroke Foundation, contributing almost $340,000 over the past ten years. These funds help create research results in Alberta that are internationally recognized at the highest levels of the scientific and health communities.
After the announcement, 29 enthusiastic Husky Energy employees will ride the Big Bike through Prince's Island Park, starting at noon from Festival Plaza at Eau Claire Market.
